Should you work hard to keep your work and personal life separate? It all depends on your work situation. If you have a regular 9 to 5 job, then it is best to keep your work and home life separate, because you get paid by the hour. But, if you work from home, or as a consultant than it is best not to separate your work and personal life separate.

For those of us lucky enough to work out of our houses, it is usually not best to separate work from home life too much. If you feel like working on a report at night or on the weekend then do it. Take advantage of the times you feel like working. By that same measure if it is 10am on a Monday morning and you are sitting by your desk and don’t feel like working, then get up and do something else. That is the big advantage of working at home, it that you can take advantage of when you are most productive.

On the other hand if you work in a typical 9 to 5 job, then it doesn’t pay to mix work with personal life. It is not fair to you if you have to work on personal time, and it is not fair to your boss if you do personal tasks on company time.

In an ideal world there would just be one life, not a work life, and a home or personal life. Everything would mix together and you would work when you felt most productive, and have the ability to do other things when you don’t feel like working.

Beware of time management programs that don’t take into account people’s very different life styles. No one time management program will work for everyone. To increase your time management skills look for programs that take into consideration your specific life style.
